COURSE DESCRIPTION
The grade 2 science and technology course builds upon grade 1 Science and Technology. Students will explore STEM skills in relation to the other four areas of the curriculum.
1 – Life Systems
2 – Matter and Energy
3 – Structures and Mechanisms
4 – Earth and Space Systems
Students learn that animals grow and change throughout their lifecycles and that animals have distinct characteristics such as scales on fish, fur on cats, feathers on birds, and shells on turtles. As students research animals in their local environment, they begin to acknowledge the interconnectedness of animals and the natural environment in which they live. Students learn about the properties and physical changes of liquids and solids. They deepen their learning by testing various structures and the interaction or changes between solids and liquids. Students explore the uses of simple machines by designing and testing simple machines, such as a moving toy with a wheel and axle. Students begin to explore the properties of air and water, including water in its solid, liquid, and gaseous states in the environment.
