Language (English) – Grade 1
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The grade 1 English course builds on the Kindergarten curriculum to further develop students’ understanding of the fundamentals of English by exploring topics related to:
1 – Reading
2 – Writing
3 – Oral Communication
4 – Media Literacy
This course allows students to work with their teacher to understand how to pronounce simple words by recognizing short/long vowel sounds and phonics, building on their vocabulary throughout the units. Through investigation, students will read along with the teacher to answer questions based on the text. They will learn how to collect, organize, read, and display information to make predictions of what will happen next in stories. Throughout the course, students develop their skills by processing problems, reasoning and proving, reflecting, and communicating at a grade 1 level. Through investigation of real-life events, students develop a strong foundation of language knowledge and skills. This course prepares students for grade 2 language.
