Understanding the Ontario High School Credit System (OSSD)

Ontario’s high school system is designed to give students flexibility and multiple pathways. Understanding how credits, course types, and prerequisites work helps students and families make better academic decisions.

The Credit System

A credit is earned when a student successfully completes a course approved by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Course Type Required Hours
Full Credit 110 hours
Half Credit 55 hours

Credits are granted by the school principal on behalf of the Ministry of Education after students complete structured learning activities (excluding homework).

Types of Courses in Ontario

Ontario offers different course types to match students’ learning styles and future goals.

Grade 9–10 Course Types
  • De-streamed: Designed for all learners with equal expectations
  • Academic: More theory and abstract thinking
  • Applied: More practical, hands-on learning
  • Locally Developed: Focus on essential literacy and numeracy skills
  • Open: Available to all students regardless of pathway
Grade 11–12 Course Types
  • University (U): Prepares for university programs
  • College (C): Prepares for college programs
  • University/College (M): Mixed pathway preparation
  • Workplace (E): Direct entry to workforce or apprenticeships
  • Open (O): General education courses

Post-Secondary Pathways

Course Type Purpose
University (U) Prepares for university programs
College (C) Prepares for college programs
University/College (M) Flexible pathway to both
Workplace (E) Direct workforce entry

How Course Codes Work

Each course has a code that tells you the subject, grade level, and type of course.

Code Part Meaning Example
First 3 Letters Subject ENG = English
4th Character Grade 1 = Grade 9
5th Character Course Type D = Academic, U = University

Prerequisites

Many Grade 10–12 courses require prerequisite courses. These are set by the Ministry of Education and cannot be waived.

At Z3 Education Centre, we help students plan their pathway and ensure they meet all prerequisites before enrolling in a course.
